With his epoch-making CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, director Ruggero Deodato single-handedly invented the found-footage film genre (later imitated by Blair Witch et al). With THE WASHING MACHINE, Deodato reboots the Giallo genre, stretching its boundaries into this extreme, surreal, erotic thriller. Originally called MORTAL VORTEX, this lost Giallo was unearthed via the intervention of the director himself, and is now revived in this Exclusive Shameless Edition.

By the time that police inspector Stacev arrives at the eerie Budapest flat of three beguiling sisters to investigate one of the girls’ claim to have found a butchered body in their washing machine, the corpse has disappeared. Piqued as much by the potential foul play as by the mischievous sisters, our detective becomes entangled in their web of sexual obsession and deadly treachery: Each sister spinning a different versions of events – including warped stories of cannibalism (what else!) – whilst seducing the non-too-reluctant officer! Deodato cycles through truly inventive, stylish and very hot sex scenes… until an arresting climax! Will it all come out in the wash?

When Ruggero Deodato, the director of über-controversial CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, teamed up with David Hess, the notorious -“Krug”- star of The Last House on the Left, their maverick talents exploded in the feat of unrelenting sleaze that is THE HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK.

Alex (Hess) is a psychopath and his friend Ricky (Giovanni L Radice) an easily led simpleton. When the unlikely pair are invited to an upscale house party where they are ridiculed by their debauched young hosts, Alex decides that he and his straight edged razor deserve some fun. Together the two streetwise punks take the unprepared partygoers on a journey of violence, debasement and forced sex. And that’s before events turn really nasty…

Deodato’s unwavering gritty direction keeps the tension unbearably tight and the psychological nuances of Hess and Radice’s powerhouse performances deliver uncomfortably challenging scenes so close to the bone that this originally banned Video Nasty remains one of the most contentious pictures in UK censorship history.

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST [DIRECTOR’S RE-EDIT]
THE HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK
THE PHANTOM OF DEATH

If it ain’t Shameless it ain’t Deodato

Shameless proudly presents the CINEMA-OF-DEATH anthology of Ruggero Deodato.

The artwork of this Boxset has been exclusively created for Shameless by top British film poster artist Graham Humphreys.

We present two versions of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST the most controversial film ever made: A unique Director’s re-edit (shown 1st in London’s West-End) which tones down the animal cruelty (to fit better with 21st Century sensibilities) without shortening the film. The other is the full strength 80s dish! Very strong stuff – especially because of its unsurpassed, documentary-like, extremely realistic depiction of gory violence. With this landmark film Deodato single-handedly invented the ‘found-footage’ genre (imitated by Blair Witch et al). Often imitated, this is The Original and unequalled best.

THE HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK also a Video Nasty, this claustrophobic staging of a vicious home-invasion scenario explodes into slasher torture hell, with star David Hess giving one of the strongest performances of his career and Deodato a master-class in directing, proving again that under the blood and guts there is a brilliant filmmaker formed by Neo-realism.
[Extras: Deodato & star Giovanni Lombardo Radice in a public debate with senior BBFC examiner. Plus a last in-depth interview with the late David Hess].

In THE PHANTOM OF DEATH Deodato’s unwavering directing meets a barnstorming performance from Michael York (Cabaret, Austin Powers) as the pianist virtuoso who suddenly starts ageing at an alarming speed – progeria, a devastating real-life affliction. With death closing in fast, the pianist loses his mind in a murderous frenzy of brutal hackings.. Edwige Fenech and Donald Pleasence co-star.
