This is an academic musing, which provides the complete picture (pun intended) but it is not the director’s desired and final release framing.

Considered by critics a pinnacle of slasher movies, STAGEFRIGHT is now finally given the release it deserves, from a new 4K restoration, for us to marvel at the inventive genius of director  Michele Soavi (Cemetery Man, The Sect, The Church) combining relentless graphic blood-splattered set pieces with his trademark witty filmmaking elegance – a quality not normally associated with slasher movies!

At the mercy of the waking demons and satanic spirits, the churchgoers who’ve been trapped inside by the building’s ancient mechanisms soon succumb to the evil in an orgy of diabolic-lust and merciless slaughter. With a brooding score from genre cohorts Keith Emerson and Goblin, Soavi ramps the dread up to 666 before building to a blood-curdling finale!

]]> Meet Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett), the cemetery-man, gravedigger and guardian of the mythical Buffalora Cemetery where the dead just don’t stay dead. Seven days after burial, the fresh cadavers claw their way out of their coffins looking for flesh to eat. And it’s Francesco’s job to dispatch these ‘Returners’ before they escape into the local community.

But his quest to stop the dead from invading the world of the living falters when he falls in love with a beautiful and enigmatic widow visiting her husband’s crypt. For when he kills her by mistake and is cursed to see her face for eternity, the difference between being alive and dead become chillingly confused in his shocked and romantically damaged brain.
